The Leeds Business Indexes
The Leeds Business Indexes, compiled and maintained by Leeds Library
and Information Service, are a series of indexes which contain annotated
references to sources of information on:
- companies and markets
- the local and national economies
- business, industry, and employment issues
We are paying particular attention to material on local companies
and the major sectors of the local economy, such as engineering,
chemicals, printing, retailing, food and drink, the service sector,
the digital industries, and financial services.
It is hoped that those researching the history of a company,
for example, will find the database to be an invaluable tool,
as will those needing to locate more current information.
We also hope that job seekers preparing for interviews will
find the database to be particularly useful.
The resources which are referenced include articles in journals
and newspapers, directories of trades and professions, reference books,
sources of statistics, and market research - materials which are held
mainly by the Business and Research Library in Leeds Central Library.
Please bear in mind that these are references to resources rather
than the full texts of the resources themselves.
The database does not contain or link you to the full documents.
It holds a useful description of the information contained in the
document and sufficient bibliographical detail to locate it in Leeds
Central Library should you so wish. Please email us for further help.
How to search the Leeds Business Indexes:
Type a word, a phrase, or several words [which must all appear
within the record] into the search field, select the index you would
like to search [only one index can be searched at a time], and click
on Search. The system will then return any matching records for
you to peruse. Your results will be ranked in descending
order of date.
If you want to narrow your search down to a specific period,
enter the year, or years, into the Start Year and
End Year fields, e.g.
          Search Term: Lord Mayor
          Start Year: 1964
          End Year : 1964

          Search Term: Corn Exchange
          Start Year: 1999
          End Year: 2006
To combine keywords simply put the two words in the search box
leaving a space between them. DO NOT use terms such as and, or,
not, so for Marks and Spencer simply put
Search term: Marks Spencer
or to look at records about both Morrisons and Safeway put
Search term: Morrisons Safeway
Search terms will pick up straightforward plurals as well e.g.
building will also pick up buildings but tax
will not pick up taxes or taxation and these would
need to be done as a separate search
What is included?
Local Business Index
This includes hundreds of references to local companies in
publications sometimes dating back more than a century,
including newspapers, journals and books. Extensive records
to articles in the Yorkshire Post are included in this part of
the database and we continue to add to it.
Journals
References to selected articles from some of the
business oriented journals which are taken in Leeds Central
Library are added. You may also wish to consult our directory of
newspapers and journals at www.leeds.gov.uk/journals.
Directories
Annotated references to many of the business, trade, product,
and employment related directories held in the Business and
Research Library. [Click in the Directories check box, type
directory into the search field and click on Search to see references
to some of the directories held by the Library.]
You may also wish to consult Leeds Library and Information Service’s
catalogue online at www.leeds.gov.uk/catalogue
Annual Reports
These are references to the detailed reports and accounts which
are published by public companies. Examples include Marks and Spencer
group Plc and Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc. The Business and Research
Library holds a selection of these reports. Similar information
is often available on the company's website.
Reference Material
Details of selected business and employment related reference
books and other materials are included in the database.
Statistics
[Click in the Statistics check box, type statistics into the
search field and click on Search to see some of the references
to sources of statistics which are included in the database.]
Market Research
We also make note of any references to particular products,
activities, market sectors, etc., as well as to companies, local
and otherwise, which are to be found in the various Market Research
reports which are held in the Business and Research Library.
Leeds Newscuttings and Yorkshire Newscuttings
These are references to articles in newspapers and journals such
as the Yorkshire Post, the Yorkshire Evening Post, and the
Morley Advertiser, entered for their local studies value rather
than for a strictly business and employment value, but which may
also mention companies.
Due to server load and performance issues users may search only one catalogue at a time.
